Presence and treatment of female sport in local press of Castilla and Leon (Spain)
Abstract
Local press is one of the most important elements in building up communities. Their informative role involves events and closer people to readers. Sports section has a huge relevance to know nearer female athletes and feminine sports events. The informative treatment of sports women, mainly in the mass-media, has been presented by different Studies. This paper aims to investigate the way that the local press deals with the information about sports women and their events. To this end, 277 news ítems have been analysed, published in the four provincial editions of ‘El Norte de Castilla’, from the 16th December 2019 to the 20th February, 2020. Results show a structural discrimination of sports women in Sports section, due to the scarce information, in comparison with men. As a hopeful aspect, it can be said that most of this information about female athletes are made with identical criteria as male’s. The quantity of news with some gender or sexist discriminatory treatment, are a minority, in local press.
