On Sicilian modal markers formed with the complementizer ca
Abstract
The aim of this work is to examine some contemporary Sicilian forms made of verb/adjective + the complementizer ca (‘that’), dicica, parica, penzica/penzuca and capacica (literally ‘(she/he) says that’, ‘it seems that’, ‘ you think that’, ‘I think that’, ‘(it is) possible that’), classified as adverbs in Cruschina e Remberger (2008) and Cruschina (2010, 2011, 2015); the former two have an evidential value, whereas penzica/penzuca and capacica express an epistemic one. Great attention will be paid to the analysis of their syntactic behavior to establish whether ca still operates as a complementizer. For this survey, we will analyse not only written data from the web (corpora itWaC and itTenTen16) and spoken data, but also the results of a questionnaire, aimed at collecting judgments of acceptability, administered to a sample created taking into account the main socio-demographic variables. Through the data analysis we will verify whether dicica, parica, penzica/penzuca and capacica underwent a process of grammaticalization and whether it is possible to account for them as adverbs
