Abstract

The paper presents the unpublished results of a survey on the synthetic future in north-eastern Sicily, taking as its main reference criteria: diatopic diffusion; diagenerational persistence; presence of complete inflection of the person of the verb; typology of forms and uses. The survey was conducted over a large area that includes, in addition to Messina, recessive / conservative points and dynamic / innovative centers, located within the north-eastern area, along the Ionian side and along the Tyrrhenian side. The sample of informants, mixed between men and women, was selected according to the sociolinguistic parameters of age and level of education. The data was collected through a questionnaire of translation questions (Italian → Sicilian). The results of the research show, from a synchronic perspective, a compact presence of the synthetic future in the north-eastern area and a high vitality of modal and temporal uses for the entire sample; in a diachronic perspective, they allow us to exhibit important evidence in favor of the endogenesis of the Sicilian future. Finally, a possible interpretation will be proposed regarding the resilience of the phenomenon in Messina varieties
