«The leaves […] seemed little hands begging for protection from men». Ecological signals in Annalena Bilsini by Grazia Deledda
Abstract
Annalena Bilsini apparently is the least Sardinian of Grazia Deledda’s novels as it is not set in Sardinia; on the contrary, it shares different themes with other works by the Nobel Prize-winning writer, in particular the presence of a strong, resolute female protagonist, able to take the reins of the family after the death of the spouse. The focus, however, will revolve around the possibility of reading the novel in the light of some recent studies of ecocriticism: respect for the Earth, for the rhythms of Nature, for the trees, guardians of the house. Thanks to a special anticipatory eye, Deledda highlights the need to find harmony between human feelings and Nature.
