Abstract

The first volume of Giovanni Battista Ramusio’s Delle Navegazione et Viaggi was published in 1550. Ramusio edited, translated and compiled several European travel accounts, from medieval Marco Polo to the modern 16th century’s travellers. The second edition of the first volume (1554) included a chapter about Japan, called «Informatione dell’isola Giapan, nuovamente scoperta nella parte di Settentrione» ‘Information about the island of Japan newly discovered in the northern part’. This paper aims to identify the sources used by Ramusio for the composition of that chapter, which was written from Japan by members of the Society of Jesus. It is considered the way in which the Jesuit letters were received, understood and edited in Europe. Also, the edition of this corpus provided a peculiar version about the Japanese religion, which was seen as compatible with Christianity.
