On the Semantics and Syntax of the Focus Particle "solo più": Some Notes

Abstract

The paper addresses the semantics and syntax of the focus particle solo più, which is particularly widespread in the Piedmontese regional variety of Italian. The analysis is carried out on the basis of empirical data, mainly taken from two corpora of Italian newspaper texts: La Stampa and La Repubblica. Special attention is drawn to the scope and distribution of solo più, the presuppositions it triggers, and its use as a scalar exclusive particle. Finally, a comparison is made with the construction non (V) solo più.
