The translation of Sophocles’ Antigone by Graciliano Afonso: a possible indirect source
Abstract
We aim to show in this work that the translation of Sophocles’ Antigona (it appears written as Antígone), carried out in the second half of the 19th century by the Canarian humanist Graciliano Afonso Naranjo, was not done directly from Greek, as is the case with some of his other versions, especially of Latin classics. Instead, he relied on translations made in other languages, particularly French and English, which were languages that this author was familiar with. In this regard, the extensive research we have conducted has allowed us to discover many parallels between Afonso’s Sophoclean translation and the translation of this work made by the English cleric Thomas Francklin (1721-1784).
