Abstract

I propose to reduce: (1) imperative sentences to certain performative assertions, jussives; and (2) legislative mandates to either imperative sentences or (preferably) another kind of performative assertions, promulgatives; in each case, I make a distinction between those sentences and contents thereof, which are imperative or deontic states of affairs; the latter are the norms. I maintain that those performative assertions are true in virtue of the utterance wherein they are stated, and so that they do not lack truth value.
