Bildung zur Humanität: the Hermeneutical Performance of the Humanist Concept of Formation
Abstract
The article researches the humanist concept of formation to which Gadamer goes back at the beginning of Truth and Method. For that purpose, it attempts to recreate the general lines of the debate which took place in Germany around 1800 about the meaning of Bildung as well as the implications for the first educational State reforms of the 19th century. In so doing, it aims to gain an horizont from which the humanist concept of formation can be rethought as a way to deal with the pretension to universality of the modern science and as a way to understand a notion of truth which, in turn, opens new horizonts from which to think about the hermeneutical commitment to education.
