Creative and relational processes in older adults during the Covid-19 pandemic. Art therapy project

Keywords: Art therapy, Covid-19, pandemic, older adults, cognitive and sensory stimulation

Abstract

The Covid-19 pandemic and the isolation measures to prevent infection were associated with a negative impact on health and well-being, especially in older people. The main objective of the present project was to identify whether an art therapy intervention during the pandemic could benefit a group people at advanced ages (5 women aged 77 to 92 years) living in a rural setting. We first examined the cognitive and psychological consequences of the pandemic on the clients and then examined the effects of art therapy on the main difficulties reported by the participants during the initial assessment. Mixed methods of research (quantitative and qualitative) were applied. The findings of this study suggest that the intervention resulted in possible improvements in concentration and attention, emotional identification, reduced anxiety, and increased social relationships. In addition, an artistic practice through concrete proposals favored the development of creative ability and cognitive and sensory stimulation. This study provides knowledge and implications on the possible effects of art therapy in older people in circumstances of crisis and social isolation, such as those experienced during the pandemic.
