Was Ibn Masarra of Cordoba a Philopher?
Abstract
The present article begins with a brief exposition of the more relevant known data about the life of the Andalusian Ibn Masarra al-Ŷabalī (883-931) and his works. After this biography, some aspects of the discussion around Asín Palacios pioneering study on the thought of the author are explored, considering the situation before the recent discovery of two of his writings and after it. Different opinions on the nature of Ibn Masarra’s discourse are then exposed, analysing whether it must be understood as philosophy or as a kind of mystical thought characterised by gnosis. A complete commented translation of all passages referring to philosophy and philosophers in Ibn Masarra’s known works is offered in the last section.Downloads
