Therefore, it seeks to shed new light on the subject by contributing to the discussion of several aspects: its location with respect to the mosque, the gradual formation of a religious-funerary complex throughout the Almohad period, the establishment of a pilgrimage centre and the provision of manuscripts assigned to the mausoleum. To this end, some new fragments of written sources are provided, which until now had not been identified or translated, as well as the colophon and the endowment record of a Koran section donated by the caliph al-Murtaḍā are analysed. Despite their distance in time, both spiritual masters share, at least, four common elements: The importance for both of Abū Madyan’s figure (m. 1198) and his teachings, as a link between akbarī thought and the later šādiliyya spiritual trend, whose most contemporary exponent is šayj al-ʿAlāwī; the role of the saint (walī) as heir to the prophetic function and as a truthful and authoritative intermediary; the spiritual hermeneutics as a living and experiential entity; and the universal calling of their teachings. Divided into two groups, Iberian (Andalusi and Mudejar-Morisco) and not Iberian, new data are provided on the origin of this collection, specifically on the Maghrebi origin and its possible relationship with the Saadi royal library of Muley Zaydán of two manuscripts hitherto classified as of uncertain provenance. It approaches the dilemma by considering three factors: the new content of the regulation on the allocation and exercise of political power, the political and cultural contextual conditions of its implementation, and the nature of the resistance's reaction to the new order. Considering different possible combinations of these factors, it suggests and tests two hypotheses: the change either (H1) presidentialises the form of government, illiberalises the regime, harms only part of the resistance, and stabilises the level of affective polarisation, or (H2) hyper-presidentialises the form of government, establishes an autocracy, harms the resistance as a whole and enhances affective polarisation. It addresses the theoretical discourse generated by various disciplines to comprehend the issue from a multidisciplinary perspective and translate it into a more practical realm. It proposes a definition for Governmental Religious Accommodation, operationalised through proxy variables from the Religion and the State and the Global Restrictions on Religion datasets, reflecting three empirical areas of the concept (materials, practices, and rights). These undergo a Multiple Correspondence Analysis, which enables us to define and link the dimensions with their theoretical significance and the categorisation of countries. The results illustrate the general accommodation policies of countries, identifying Portugal as the nation with the most favourable policy and Bulgaria as the one with the most restrictive policy.</span></p> </div>2025-07-02T00:00:00+00:00Copyright (c) 2025 Anaquel de Estudios Árabeshttps://revistas.ucm.es/index.php/ANQE/article/view/99784Religious renewal and pan-Islamism in al-ʿUrwa al-wuṯqā: a tool for ideological and political resistance against foreign occupation2025-04-24T08:43:26+00:00Marina Santana Martínmarinasm2199@gmail.com<p>This article examines the journal <em>Al-‘urwa al-wuṯqa</em>, published in Paris in 1884 by Muḥammad ‘Abduh and Jamāl al-Dīn al-Afghānī, focusing on its role concerning the colonial question. <em>Al-‘urwa al-wuṯqa</em> proposed a renewal of Islam as a tool for revitalizing Muslim societies and aligning them with the Western societies of the time, thereby overcoming the decadence afflicting both Islamic civilization and religion. Its founders advocated for the purification of a "sick Islam," retaining only the fundamentals truly inherent to the faith. They also called for the unity of all Islamic peoples to achieve revitalization, with Islam serving as the bond that unites all Muslims, regardless of their geographic location.</p> <p>In this way, the Arab-Islamic nations could attain freedom and overthrow colonial domination. Through an analysis of passages addressing the colonial issue, this study seeks to determine whether <em>Al-‘urwa al-wuṯqa</em> operates as an ideological or doctrinal mechanism, or whether the journal combines both approaches to encourage resistance among local populations against foreign domination. Since many of the earliest grammars of Dāriŷa were produced in a colonial context and aimed at teaching foreigners, it is fitting to analyze grammatical exemplification starting with Lerchundi’s grammar, that is regarded as the foundation of Moroccan Arabic studies in Spain, at least in a continuous sense, up until 1911—a year prior to the establishment of the Spanish Protectorate in Morocco. From that point onward, interest in the study of the neighboring country's linguistic variety grew, as did the number of manuals dedicated to this language or variety. Our objective is to analyze the difficulties that its translation would pose, as well as the quality of the results obtained in two Arabic versions of the novel: Badawī (1965) and al-‘Aṭṭār (2002). We will study the transmission of denotative and connotative content separately. The translation of the former is less complex than the latter, despite the fact that phenomena such as false friends, homonyms, and so on can condition its translation. Since <em>Don Quixote</em> is a novel, and not a medical treatise, the connotative content becomes more relevant, since the terminology is implicated in certain literary figures and devices, thus influencing the translation process. Al-‘Aṭṭār manages to introduce improvements in the translation, especially regarding the referential content.
