Abstract
Towards a New Understanding of Pre-Islamic Poetry –
A Study in Imruʼ al-Qays al-Kindī's poem “El Mu'allaqa”
One of the most remarkable poems that incorporated the dramatic element is El Mu'allaqa which was written by the pre-Islamic poet Imru' al-Qais al-Kindi, in which he expressed the reaction of the artistic self to reality. More specifically, his view on the conflict between cosmic creatures' inherent contradictions, the dilemma of finitude and death. And whether that battle, as well as its foundation, holds human life prisoner. There would be no chance of survival or continuity without opposition, defiance, and confrontation with the forces of dispossession that surround us from all directions and on all sides.
That is the reason Imruʼ al-Qays, specifically, and the Arab poet generally, did not stand as defeated spectators in front of this siege, despite the various ways in which he was challenged and rejected, he was more frequently expressed through the word as his rejection, revolt, and struggle for existence and presence. What was the position of Imruʼ al-Qays al-Kindī on this issue? And, what are his coping mechanisms?
