Autobiography as a historical-literary document by two Palestinian writers: A Mountainous Journey by Fadwa Tuqan and In the Presence of Absence by Mahmoud Darwish
Abstract
This is a study on the portrayal of the social and cultural life of Palestinians inside Palestine and in exile during the 20th century in two literary autobiographies: A Mountainous Journey, A Difficult Journey. An Autobiography (Riḥla ŷabaliyya riḥla ṣaʿba. Sīra ḏātiyya رحلة 1985 جبلية رحلة صعبة. سيرة ذاتي ة ) by Fadwa Tuqan فدوى طوقان and In the Presence of Absence. A Text (Fī ḥaḍrat algiyāb. Naṣṣ 2006 في حضرة الغياب. ن ص ) by Mahmoud Darwish محمود درويش . In an analytical sense, memory is approached as a key concept for analyzing Palestinian social and cultural life contained in the two autobiographical texts. In a methodological framework, it seeks to identify what language, images, and referents are part of this portrait of Palestinian life in the 20th century. The article first includes the theoretical studies of Nawar Al-Hassan Golley and Thomas Philipp on autobiography in contemporary Arabic literature, and then presents the portrait of socio-cultural life inside Palestine, as well as in exile, based on the selection of various parts of each autobiography, highlighting the historical and literary value of these writings.
