Between nostalgia and utopia. Elements to study contemporary salafism in Egypt and Morocco
Abstract
This article analyses the diversity, evolution and presence of the contemporary Salafist movement in Arab countries, especially in Egypt and Morocco, after the Arab Spring and, more specifically, after the Egyptian revolution of January 2011. In addition to some socio-political aspects of Salafism, such as its stance on the changes in Egypt's power structures, it also addresses the utopian and nostalgic components of Salafism, understanding Salafism not only as a sociopolitical movement that plays its role as a political option, but also as an emotional and sentimental option. The literature review, both on salafiyya and on the concepts of nostalgia and utopia, is complemented by fieldwork in Egypt. The analysis concludes that contemporary Salafism has a nostalgic component in its discourse, along with a programmatic-political component, as well as a utopian vision.
