Translation of "‘Unwān al-tawfīq" ofbn ‘Atā’ Allāh and a "tajmīs" of Ibn ‘Arabī, two commentaries on a poem by Abū Madyan
Abstract
This article is based on a poem of Abū Madyan in rā’ letter, entitled «There is no pleasure in life but the friendship of the poor ones», which is followed by a commentary of Ibn ‘Atā’ Allāh, ‘Unwān altawfīq (The Sign of Success) and Ibn ‘Arabī’s “cinquain” (tajmīs). Both masters deal with the sufi teaching of comradeship, starting from the poem of Abū Madyan, as an example that throws light on the sufis’ duties. My aim is to present here the translation and study of three texts of the mentioned masters, preceded by some historical outlines about the continuity of Abū Madyan’s legacy by his followers, the Šādiliyya and Ibn ‘Arabī.
