Abstract

The analysis of the characteristics of identity of the mythical figure of the spider in the novels of J.R.R. Tolkien shows the revision of some components of the myth of Arachne: femininity and the tendency toward metamorphosis, combined with new traits of mythical monsters, like obscurity, pollution, greed and thirst for death, which delineate a new portrait of female spider as a figure of snare and darkness, corruption and withering of life.
