Resumen

This study analyzes the concept of Vanguard art of Jaime Torres Bodet and César Vallejo, as defined in their articles on silent film and their literary works. Both authors share a love of silent film, and their ideas about modern art have much in common, since both contend that true Vanguard art always possesses a deeply human quality. According to Torres Bodet, the velocity and artificiality of silent film are dazzling, energizing, and sometimes dangerous for Vanguard artists. In the silent films of Charlie Chaplin, Sergei Eisenstein, and Dziga Vertov, Vallejo finds an artificiality and a velocity that have been transformed into an admirable expression of the human condition.
