Cortázar as a novelist

  • Eduardo Berti
Keywords: Short story / novel, El examen, Rayuela, Macedonio Fernández

Abstract

Inevitably, Cortázar as a writer of short stories has to be compared with Cortázar the novelist. The short-story writer explored multiple paths that have proliferated until the present day in numerous followers. The novels, on the other hand, explore tunnels with no exit and of such a personal nature that nobody could expect to continue Rayuela's searchings without resorting to parody. This article highlights the connections between El examen and Rayuela, a new way of claiming that Cortázar not only maintained a consistent, coherent and personal attitude towards his novel writing but also brought to their culmination the lucubrations of Macedonio Fernández.
