Alejo Carpentier: Theory and Practice of the “Real Maravilloso”

  • Edmundo Paz Soldán
Keywords: Magic, Realism, El reino de este mundo

Abstract

A study of Alejo Carpentier's most important innovation, which created the possibility of combining magic and reality in a synthesis offered by the Cuban's unique version of Spanish American literature and life. The article begins with a review of the ideas in Carpentier's prologue to El reino de este mundo: the rejection of European ideas of aesthetics and the search for a genuinely American expression which he formulates in the notion of the “real maravilloso”. The Cuban writer's literary project is justified as legitimate and can be defined at the same time as ontological and gnoseological.
