Confession of Rebellion and Sacrifice: Notes on Ifigenia by Teresa de la Parra
Abstract
The novel Ifigenia, by the Venezuelan author Teresa de la Parra (1889-1936), is built from the confession of its main character: María Eugenia Alonso. The feminine privacy is revealed in the first person of the diary and the epistle, in a time of shocks between tradition and a budding modernity. The main character reveals the anguishes and the irreverence of a woman in search of her independence. The role of beauty and fashion is explored inside this context, as well as the discourse of the individuality that wants to be imposed –but ends due to family pressures–, and the notion of sacrifice that gives name to this novel.Downloads
