Creatures of Time: Carlos Fuentes’ Most Recent Stories of Fear
Abstract
Inquieta compañía (Troubled Company), the most recent book of short stories by Carlos Fuentes, approaches the literary form of fear with devastating consequences. Irony is dominant in a text which strives to continue the themes that have always troubled Fuentes: old age, the end of life, the historical density of time. The protagonists of traditional stories of fear (ghosts, vampires...) reappear in his stories, as do the gothic settings (abandoned mansiones), in an attempt to recover fear as pure literary pleasure.Downloads
