Independence and Neoclassicism in Hispano-American theatre
Abstract
This paper explores the close relationship between theatre and independence movements. It is based on the hypothesis that the processes of independence and neoclassical theatre were closely linked, firstly, by temporal coincidence and, secondly, because their imaginary was made known by the men who promoted independence, most of them trained in Spain and France. First came the ideas of the Enlightenment and then came neoclassical theatre, which was used to spread the flame of independence throughout the stages of America.
