Abstract

We study how Javier Cercas constructs several portraits of Roberto Bolaño in a journalistic corpus and in two self-fiction novels, Soldados de Salamina (2001) and La velocidad de la luz (2005). It is striking how in these fiction and non-fiction texts Cercas vindicates his friendship with Bolaño and stands out in his figure, be it the features that place him on the border between ordinary society and his outside, or, to a lesser extent, his topical position. We argue that, by creating these Bolaño figures, Cercas legitimizes himself as a writer
