“A True Picture of American Customs", Some Stories by Emilia Serrano de Wilson
Abstract
Emilia Serrano de Wilson wrote many texts about Latin America: essays, historical novels, travel books, poems and stories. However, although in the last decade her figure has been gradually reevaluated, there are still many aspects of her work that haven’t been discovered yet. In this paper I work on the stories with Spanish-American topics in two projects that allow us to analyze a temporary parable of great interest in her work: Semanario del Pacífico (1877-1878), of which she was director and main editor, and the book of stories Del cielo a la tierra (1896) to try to reflect how her perspective about the continent changes; at the same time, the paper analyzes the lines of continuity that exist between her essay and fictional texts, without forgetting the topic of the travel as a constant of her writingent
