Darío, Nordau, Verlaine: Genesis and Structure of Los Raros
Abstract
We can better appreciate both the genesis and structure of Rubén Darío’s Los Raros if we remember that the articles composing the book were conceived as an implicit polemic against Max Nordau’s famous work Degeneration. At the same time, in Los Raros Darío followed the example of Paul Verlaine who exalted his own favourite authors in his book Les Poètes Maudits. A side-product of our analysis was to come across, unintentionally, a few hitherto unknown features of Verlaine’s life during the summer of 1893
