Abstract

The Chinese film director Wong Kar-wai has acknowledged the influence of the novels by Manuel Puig in the structure of his films, and this influence has been discussed by several critics. However, these critics have tended to ignore the fact that the director also presented Happy Together as "based on" the novel The Buenos Aires Affair, also written by Puig. Our article analyzes the influence of the prose fiction by Manuel Puig in the oeuvre of Wong Kar-wai, with particular emphasis on those aspects affecting the content of the films, which, we argue, explain the construction of a certain idea of latinity, stereotyped but at the same time quite clearly defined, which the director contrasts with that of Chineseness.
