Slaves and freemen in the Gertrudis Gomez de Avellaneda’s novel Sab
Abstract
The issue of slavery and freedom expressed in the Gertrudis Gomez de Avellaneda’s novel Sab has been widely analysed from the socio-political point of view. There are also studies which underscore the widespread romantic vision of the enslaving power of love and the liberating power of death. However, this article aims to highlight another romantic idea, embodied by the author on the main characters of this novel, but scarcely studied by the critics: a person can be slave or free not on the basis of his or her social status or economic and political conditions, but according to the strength and the sincerity of his or her love.Downloads
