A Terrorist Dystopia for the Dominican-Haitian Conflict:El día de todos, by Juan Carlos Mieses
Abstract
El día de todos (2014) is a dystopic novel written by the Dominican Juan Carlos Mieses. In the plot, Haiti and the Dominican Republic head toward an apocalyptic clash. A bloody terrorist act by a messianic leader is the trigger. The Dominican-Haitian conflict is dealt with through the figures of the characters from each nation. The relation with the other—according to the approach by Tzvetan Todorov—and the crucial nihilism of all terrorism—as was claimed by André Glucksmann—serve to study a work of fiction that does not assume an explicit commitment to one side or the other, but rather takes the deliberation of the problem to the level of literary imaginings.Downloads
