"Miltín 1934", of Juan Emar: the parodic reformulation of history
Abstract
During the initial decades of the 20th century in Chile, the national question plays an important role in the ‒realist‒ writing of the period. Juan Emar, an opponent of those practices and an advocate of the Avant-garde, deals with the national question in fragments of Miltín 1934 such as the one concerned with the battle between Spaniards and Araucanians. Taking this fragment as the object of study, the aim of this paper is to show, by means of linguistic and semantic analyses, how Emar, by using his literary technique, questions the official discourse and supports the synchronic value of the artistic work, freedom of thought and the supremacy of the imagination.Downloads
