Abstract

This essay aims to introduce C.-A. Sainte-Beuve as an ambiguous precursor to the field of Comparative Literature. First, it is necessary to emphasize the relevance of his essays on Villemain and Ampère for the early history of comparatism; second, his introduction to the French translation of Conversations avec Goethe (by J. P. Eckermann) is also most significant. However, we must point out that reading Sainte-Beuve as a comparatist can also be a new way to build a powerful position for French literature as a frame for European Comparative Literature.
