Utilisation et utilité des Anciens chez un théoricien littéraire français au XVIIe siècle: le cas de Jean Chapelain
Abstract
The position of Jean Chapelain (1595-1674) regarding the Ancients is nuanced. Indeed, his correspondence captures how his reference system is steeped in ancient culture and the prominence it occupies when establishing a critic. However, this man of letters who has actively participated in the development of the classical doctrine, thinks the lights of antiquity must be appended to modern writers knowledge. His correspondence presents this position, which fits in continuity with that advocated by his contemporaries: an imitation of the Ancients, but in an emulation relationship and rather than servility. Scholar, he uses his knowledge to facilitate the communication between scientists and the high society, which wants to access the knowledge of the Ancients.Downloads
