Abstract

The present study aims to analyse the first English Gothic novel, Horace Walpole’s The Castle of Otranto (1764), and its first translation into French as Le Château d’Otrante by Marc-Antoine Eidous (1767). Given the importance of this work as the origin of Gothic literature (which also represented an indication of the pre-romantic period and a rupture with the values of the Enlightenment of 18th century), the aim of this study is to analyse the translation procedures used in the French version. This will eventually allow us to draw conclusions on the reception of the work in relation to the literary and aesthetic trends of the time.
