Abstract

This article aims at setting the theoretical bases to clarify the concept of bilingualism from a cognitive approach. By doing so, both the implications of bilingual status and the latest advances about language processing will be tackled. This paper will take advantage of the latest research Works to precise the skills deriving from this bilingual condition and its limitations.

This concept has some peculiarities associated which leads to consideration, not only of language skills but also of individual who uses them. In addition, this prompts us to review the implications of some qualities attributed to bilingualism which cannot be extrapolated to absolute terms; namely the idiomatic command.

In conclusion, the proposed inclusive definition should be useful not only to those who train this capacity but also to the professionals that require the skills of bilingual people.
