The early socialist administrations of the Democracy
Abstract
The Partido Socialista Obrero Español would hold an overall majority in Congress as a result of the 1982 legislative elections. PSOE gained 202 seats in the House of Representatives, counting with more than ten million votes. That was the largest representation ever achieved by a sole political force in the history of democracy in Spain. The second legislature of the Democracy came to light on November 18, 1982, and Felipe Gonzalez Marquez (Sevilla, 1942), labor attorney and Chair of the party, took office on December 1, 1982. That was the first time the political left would access to power after the Second Republic, thus initiating a political cycle that would last fourteen years, comprising 4 legislatures of our democratic congressional system. The early socialist administrations led an extended phase of political and social reforms in several aspects, among others: economy, jobs and industrial relations, public servants and government workforce, Armed Forces, law enforcement, education, culture, taxes, regional governments or foreign policy
