Fiction and/or Philosophy? From "Les Mots et les choses" to "Le Discours philosophique"
Abstract
Based on a few chapters of the recently published manuscript of Le Discours philosophique, this contribution sets out to assess the place and role of the “discourse” of literature or fictional discourse in its relation to “philosophical discourse” as Foucault envisaged it in 1966. In particular, it appears that the relationship between fiction and philosophy evolves significantly between Les mots et les choses and this manuscript. To identify the gaps and strategic shifts between these two texts, written just a few months apart, we propose to examine the status they both accord to literature in the order of knowledge or in the space of discourse, by showing the different fate they reserve for Cervantes’ Don Quixote.
