Abstract

In 1963 and 1970, Pier Paolo Pasolini made two documentaries, Sopralluoghi in Palestina and Appunti per un'Orestiade africana, the object of which was to search for scenarios for the making of two films. One of them will be realized: Il vangelo secondo Matteo (1964); the other, which should have been an "African Oresteada", will not be realized. In any case, this search reveals the need (and the difficulty) to find a new land that can host the ancient myth –"banished" by civilization from its original scenarios (the Judaea of Christ)– or that must seek new lands where it becomes credible (as in the case of the transposition of Orestiada to an African developing country). With the help of cinematographic texts and treatments, we reflect on this exile from an eco-mitocritical perspective, guided by the visionary thought of the great Italian poet, writer and director.
