Citizenship and democracy in Étienne Balibar: a historical archive for a new practice of politics
Abstract
This text studies how Étienne Balibar's reflections on the relationship between democracy and citizenship contribute to the reopening of an important question for the revaluation of democracy: the new practice of politics. Moreover, this is a problem which, under the expression "dictatorship of the proletariat", had previously appeared in his writings, involving a sharp reflection on the political exclusion implied by the "intellectual" and "manual" division of labour. Furthermore, the article aims to illustrate that such a practice of politics could be enriched by examining a particular articulation between citizenship and democracy not fully explored by Balibar: Athenian democracy.
