The Experience of Going from Being Anyone to Being Someone. What can be Expected from Citizen Assemblies Chosen by Sortition?
Abstract
The so-called crisis of democracy reveals part of the malaise that our societies are experiencing in relation to their political representatives and their rulers. This situation has been addressed, with varying degrees of depth and intensity, by proposing various forms of citizen participation in political decision-making. The experience of the Convention citoyenne pour le climat in France is an example of the means by which democracy seeks to reduce the distance between citizens and their political representatives. This article presents an analysis of this experience, on the basis of which we will try to clarify the opportunities and also the limits that this model offers for a more ambitious project of bradening democracy
