Cynic Body, Body Politic. The City of Diogenes

Abstract

Two placita handed down by the Epicurean Philodemus (On the Stoics, col. XVIII 26 – XIX 13 Dorandi) lead us to understand how in his Republic Diogenes set out the way of life in a city designed according to Nature. Of particular interest is that in our interpretation, amongst the Republic’s citizens, all those who deviated from the laws of the city would be included, no matter how far they went in their opposition. This is consistent with the different spatial conceptions hinted at by the city of Nature.
