Abstract

This essay seeks to reveal how, in spite of the powerful obstacles placed in the way of its recognition and diffusion, the thought of Marsilius of Padua generated a set of highly defined theoretical elements relating to the origin, limits and function of the emperor, which were revalorised in the period in which the House of Austria attempted to shape the last form of effective imperial power in Europe. The work of Gattinara and the imperial environment of Charles V were such that the latter would reveal his dependence on Europe, and his distance from Hispanic traditions.
