Abstract

This article reveals the evidence for the practice of double jurisdiction, civil and ecclesiastical, in the Crown of Aragon, in addition to the different theoretical positions arising from it. By way of introduction, the author examines the history Disputa de l’Ase by the Franciscan Fray Anselm Turmeda, an argument against the double dominion of the Pope, the abusive ecclesiastical invasion into the civil arena, and the excessive arrogance of the clergy. As a contrast to this, the author analyses Fray Francesc Eiximenis’ Allegationes, in which the Catalan Franciscan gives a radical hierocratic thesis which invests the Pope, as Vicar of Christ, with absolute control over spiritual and worldly power in the entire universe.
