Scientiarum libertas perfundet omnia luce: The Philosophy of Krause and the Krausist Project of the Scientific Society at the Origins of Academic Freedom in Spain
Abstract
This article presents Krause's idea of establishing an ‘Alliance of Science’, which was developed by his disciple Ahrens and adopted by the Spanish Krausists to combat the interference of the State and the Church in public education. Beginning 1868, they also intended for the University of Madrid to become the seed for the creation of a ‘Scientific Society’. In addition, this article explains the origin and meaning of the motto of the current Complutense University of Madrid, ‘libertas perfundet omnia luce’, devised by the Krausist professors.
