The Passio Eulaliae Barcinonensis in the Iberian Peninsula between Latin and the vernacular: diffusion and translation phenomena
Abstract
In this study, we aim to elucidate the genesis and dissemination of the vernacular Passio Eulaliae Barcinonensis (BHL 2693), a text of considerable significance for devotion in Catalonia, subsequently diffused across the entire Iberian Peninsula. We will examine both manuscript and printed editions, encompassing Catalan, Castilian, and Portuguese renditions, in order to speculate on their interrelations. Furthermore, adopting an interlinguistic perspective, we shall delve into the diverse approaches of translators towards the pragmatic phenomena of emphasis—both syntactic and lexical—that have been inherited from Latin and recodified across various epochs and contexts.
