Il volo di Alessandro Magno nel Medioevo romanzo: fra testi e immagini
Abstract
This papers starts from Chiara Frugoni’s Historia Alexandri Magni elevati per griphos ad aerem (Roma, Istituto Storico per il Medioevo Italiano, 1973), and presents an in-depth analysis concerning the Italian vernacular translations of the Alexander Romance, which so far does not seem to have received much attention from scholars. Therefore, this essay proposes an analysis of the characteristics of Alexander’s flight scene in the Italian vernacular translations of the second edition of the Historia de preliis Alexandri Magni, starting from the study of the illustrative traditions of illuminated French manuscripts. Secondly, the field of investigation is extended to analyse the vernacular texts, trying to extablish possible relationships between illuminated manuscripts and textual elements in the Italian vernacular translation, details absent in the original Latin version (perhaps through a Latin model that may have contained one or more variables).
