The Spanish Republican Exile as seen by “the Other Germany”
Abstract
The German exiles fleeing from Hitler´s Germany and the Spanish Republican exiles escaping from Franco´s Spain coincided in several exile destinations, being Mexico a meeting point for some of them. In this article we aim to show the constellation of writers that interrelated in exile, as well as to explore the way in which the German-speaking collective presented the Spanish war, postwar and life of Spanish Republicans in Mexico for the German readers in exile. We will analyze a selection of contributions to the exile journals Freies Deutschland and Das Andere Deutschland, which will show the bond that tied the European exiles and, specially, the Spanish Republicans and “the other Germany”.
