Abstract

The paper presents a comprehensive, usage-based analysis of the directorial adverb vorbei, which has received little attention thus far. The PaGeS corpus, an extensive corpus of contemporary texts, serve as the data source for this investigation. The morpho-syntactic status of vorbei is critically examined, with a focus on its contentious classification as either a word-formation element ot a syntactic combination structure. The numerous structural and syntactic variations of the vorbei- phrases are detailed, and their topological properties and syntactic functions are also discussed.

The main focus of the paper lies in the semantic analysis of the vorbei- constructions. Within the framework of Talmy's cognitive semanbtics and Lakoff and Johnson's metaphore theory, constructions that express both factual and abstract motion are described. Particular attention is paid to the temporal use of vorbei.
