“Non cado, fundatus enim sum supra firmam petram”. Martyrdom and constantia in Andreas Gryphius’ Catharina von Georgien
Abstract
This paper analyses the articulation of neo-stoic constantia in Andreas Gryphius’ Trauerspiel Catharina von Georgien (1657). The protagonist’s constantia leads her to resist the twists of fate, for she understands that even the worst misfortunes have their origin in God’s providence, and so she is even able to accept her own martyrdom. A model will be proposed that moves away from the dichotomous theology-politics or immanence-transcendence positions that scholars have worked with; rather, a vertical system is preferred, in which God and religion are always on a higher plane than the earthly one, which corresponds to the Weltanschauung of the Baroque era.
