Discourse Markers and Sentence Information Organisation: German Explicative Reformulation Markers
Abstract
This paper reviews the concept of reformulation by inquiring into its use in written texts. The analysis of a group of explicative reformulation markers in a corpus has allowed us to identify their functions, which comprise not just metalinguistic but also demarcative and information structuring instructions. The research relies on the theoretical framework of the Basel model for discourse segmentation, which divides sentences into information blocks that contribute in different ways to text progression. It has been confirmed that reformulation markers tend to occupy certain positions inside the sentence, which correspond to quite specific pragmatic functions and a different range of the effects of the ostensive instructions they provide.
