The Dialogue between Memories: Perpetrators and Victims in Abbas Khider’s "Brief in die Auberginenrepublik"
Abstract
The arrival of refugees to Europe in recent times makes other histories about exile, war, prisons, or torture, visible. These histories require a rethinking of national memories, while at the same time new narratives are constructed in the field of literature. We aim to exemplify the dialogue between memories remote in time and space by means of the novel Brief in die Auberginenrepublik (2013) from the author Abbas Khider. Through the concepts of dialogisches Erinnern by Aleida Assmann and multidirectional memory by Michael Rothberg we will analyze how Khider redefines and offers alternatives to the figures of the perpetrator and the victim and their discourses.
